Dear Barrett;

May I ask you for a great favor? Is it possible for me to get the balance of my royalties, as I am rather short of money. And: could you not arrange that the Theatre Guild pays me a certain sum as advance on the royalties due to me? Munsell told me last year that he kept about $ 100 or 200 – I don’t know exactly – from productions of MEN AND THE MASSES of last season. I would not bother you – but I need the money badly.

Again I had bad luck with BLIND MAN’S BUFF. Robinson Smith had definitely decided to do the play in October and had asked Margaret Webster to direct the play. Everything was settled, even the day when the rehearsals were to start, and the opening date. A few days later he got an offer from Hollywood and he is now considering to drop Broadway entirely for some time.

It looks as if I will be obliged to apply for one of the Rockefeller Scholarships for playwrights. THIS DAMNED BLOODY MONEY!

Kindest regards,

Ernst Toller.
