My dear Sidney:–

You will have heard from Christiane that I was ill for months. I was really in a bad shape. That was the reason for my silence. When I got better at the beginning of November I went to Mexico and stayed there for six weeks. I wish you could have come with me. I went on horse-back to remote Indian villages, studied the political situation and some of the social reforms and got quite an insight into what is going on.

The view that Mexico is turning socialist is romantic. This half colonial country is taking a decisive step away from feudalism. A fascist movement under the protection of the Nazis and Italians is noticeable there also.

What have you been doing? Please write me in detail. It is still doubtful when I shall return to New York, in all probability before Spring. Edington is no longer my Agent. I am with Berg-Allenberg now. Possibly you have heard of my bad luck with McClintic. Miss McCall wrote me that another producer Robinson Smith is interested now in the production.

Christiane is making a second test for MGM and her chances seem to be quite good.

This bloody Kronin is making me much trouble. I just got a letter from the New York Telephone Company, copy of which I enclose. Could you not find out where this man is? I have read his letter to Christiane written half a year ago in which he admits his obligation to pay the bill and promises to do so. As you know this man I should be very grateful, if you could get in touch with him or at least write me his new address.

Hoping to hear from you soon,

With kindest regards,

Yours,

Ernst Toller.

I lunched with B. last week. She is charming as ever.
