April 1st, 1937.

My dear Upton Sinclair: –

I was so very sorry that I could not come to you last Sunday, but as my Secretary told someone in your home I had entirely forgotten that it was Easter Sunday and that I was invited on a tour for this day to the desert.

I wanted so much to see the wild flowers but unfortunately we went to a part where the wild flowers were still asleep, which was quite good for them since it had snowed the entire night.

I hope so much to see you soon.

The last news from Spain are excellent.

History is once more proving that a people fighting for freedom and the independence of its destiny is mightier than the reactionary clique, even though the latter may have the most modern weapons at their disposal.

As a matter of fact we are in the midst of a European war, which is unique insofar as regiments and divisions are fighting and it is only a question of time when the entire armies will enter into this war.

Please remember me to Mrs. Sinclair.

All good wishes

Yours ever,

Ernst Toller.
