February 20, 1937.

Dear Sidney:–

Thank you for your letter.

I think you are right and Horne will understand. You cannot let down Howard Dietz. On the other hand I am more and more convinced that you can find a good “job” here with Wanger. The prospect of having you as “Haupt-Führer” of the anti-Nazi movement in America is most certainly enticing. However, since you have already done so much effective work for this movement, you are right in saying that you owe yourself a chance to work and find your ultimate expression. (But if you would become Haupt-Führer, I am sure you would introduce an Anti Hitler Salute with lifted fist shouting: “Nebbich”)

I am a trifle anxious about Christiane. I am most certain that she could easily find work here, but I also understand her point of view, that she wants to work in a stock company.

I am of the opinion that she should already begin with her preparations for this work carefully. There are so many schools for English in New York. Would it not be possible for her to attend one of these several hours a day? It is not necessary for her to perfect her dramatic work as her English diction. As far as I know the New School for Social Research has just such a department and Dr. Johnson, I am sure, would be only too glad to give Christiane every assistance and advice. She lives in the neighborhood of the school and it would be easy for her to attend. Besides I would suggest to her to attend such lectures as interest her.

I do not expect very much of Swerdlow. Confidentially he never impressed me as very reliable, but there is the Old Neighborhood Play House behind him and if you get the impression that the entire matter is serious, please give them every assistance.

Thank you for the subscription to the “Times”. It arrives only three days late, which is quite good. If sent by air mail, it would arrive two days late, so the difference is not so great.

Will you do me a favor? I really think the “World-Telegram” should state definitely whether they will use the interview or not. Please point out that it would have been easy for me to have the article on Hitler published in any other New York paper or magazine on January 30th. and that I was doing them a favor to give them the article for publication.

Thank you so much for your offer to drive a car for me from Detroit to California. But I have abandoned the whole thing. My second-hand Pontiac has been entirely overhauled and is giving excellent service.

Please do send me by air mail “Road to India”. I need it because I want to protect the story by registering it at the Authors Screen Guild.

High Kraft of Hollywood Anti Nazi League has departed for New York and will ring you up. He will tell you some interesting things and he will be very grateful to you if you will give him certain advice.

Has Christiane gone to a photographer? If so, please tell her to send me a good photo of herself.

Are you going to Vassar? Have you heard anything from your informant on the Federal Theatre’s final decision?

I heard from Christiane that you are telling the world that Greta is going on loving Robert. Robert, on the other hand is going on leaving his Grandfather in the ditch!

Lola Montez has ceased to be an embryo. She is growing and blossoming out and has already had two extravagant, but for the Hays Office acceptable nocturnal adventures with men.

The prima donna whom we used to call Miss Stern has just signed a contract as Garbo’s understudy!!

Love yours ever

Ernst.
