November 28, 1936.

Mr. Upton Sinclair

Station A.

Pasadena, Cal.

My dear Upton Sinclair: –

Thank you so much for your kind letter and for the book. I am looking forward to reading it as soon as I have a few free hours.

I have given many lectures in New York and my travels have taken me as far as Chicago. I firmly believe that the word of the poet takes on a greater significance in these times when the world seems dark and threatened with war. We must make good use of the short time allotted to us before the debacle.

Yesterday I closed a contract by the terms of which I am to give ten lectures on politics during the time between January 1st and 18th. The lectures will begin in Los Angeles and San Francisco. But I shall be in Santa Monica on the 22nd, or 23rd of December. I should be very happy if I could speak at the home of Mrs. Gartz. I am at her disposal any day between Christmas and the first of the year. As a subject I would suggest “Place o[f the] Drama in our changing world". Please remember me to Mrs. Gartz.

I am looking forward to seeing you and Mrs. Sinclair,

With kindest regards to you both.

Yours ever

Ernst Toller.
