Dear Mr. Clark,
Thank you so much for your kind letter. I regret so much that you cannot take over my work at the present moment. I hoped that you would be in the position to become my sole and exclusive agent in America for amateur and professional theatres.
I know so well that nobody has looked after my rights and interests for years. The Jiddish Theatre (Maurice Schwartz) for example gave hundreds of representations of Hinkemann under the title Bloody Laughter without ever letting me have a single penny of royalties. The Theatre Guild never sent anything for productions which were done by other theatres in America.
I regret your attitude all the more as – as you know – my book “Seven Plays” has been published by Liveright and I hoped that there would be the opportunity for me to produce one of my own plays in America as I have done here last year and with success.
A week ago a new comedy of mine was produced in London. This play was quite different from my other ones, it is a comedy, translated and adapted by W. H. Auden, the English poet; the music was written by a young English Composer Herbert Murrill. The title was “No more Peace”. My wife played a leading part and made an unusually brilliant start on the London stage.
