9. 8. 33.
Dear Upton Sinclair,
I am very glad of your letter. I did not get two but one of your books, „The Way Out“, the other may have remained at Berlin, where, as I heard lately, unfortunately have been confiscated all my things, my books and so on.
So again I am at the same point, where I began, everything I possess finds place in my travelling box.
Thereby I remember the beautiful book case in your room with the dozens of editions of your books in foreign languages. Reflecting which loss grieves me most, it are the copies of my books in foreign languages, thereon for the writer is proved by documents a part of his accomplished work. I scarcely can ever get them back again. Who for instance could ever send me the Japanese or other exotic editions.
I read your book with eminent interest. About the Mexican film I read several articles, it must be a wonderful work.
Thank you ever so much for advice and help. I’ll ask my literary agent to send you a copy as soon as possible, and I should be very glad, if Farrar & Rinehart would publish the book. Would it be very troublesome to you, to premise a short premise to the book?
Probably we shall meet this winter. By October I’ll go to England for a few lectures, by the end of November I have to travel to America for lectures of the relief committee for the victims of Hitler. I suppose I’ll come to Los Angeles. I’d rather privately work and realise certain literary plans, but who to-day has a right to withdraw from the call for help?
The open letter to Goebbels, I added, has been published in many European newspapers, I send it as well to the publisher of „The Nation“, Mr. Villard. Have you read it anywhere? Anyhow I dispose it for publication.
Best greetings to you and your wife
yours truly
Ernst Toller.
