My dear Mr. Howe:
As I have only one German version here I had to have it copied, and I hope to get the manuscript in three days time, so that I shall be able to send you one copy with the next boat.
Please read the enclosed letter, which has left me entirely confused. Barrett H. Clark is an outstanding man, and a dramatic critic of high standing. What shall I do? I don’t dare submit this letter to Stephen Spender. I am so grateful for his response and also his kindness. It is very difficult for me to do anything. On the other hand, I think that he has to be informed, and I believe it would be much easier for you to discuss the matter without mentioning me.
Please do me the favor of acting in my behalf. I trust you completely and I know that you will do everything which is in the best interests of Spender, of myself, and of the play.
With kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,
Ernst Toller
Encl.
Mr. Howe
